In Disney Movie Lilo and Stitch Where Do They Live
When thinking of the popular Disney animated films, movies like Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast are probably the first ones to comes to mind. But a film like Lilo and Stitch should not be overlooked. The 2002 film was a big hit when it was released and has maintained a devoted following of fans since then.
It should come as no surprise then that Lilo & Stitch is one of the latest films to be added to the upcoming slate of live-action remakes of Disney's animated films. The announcement was made earlier this year, and while it is still a long time before it will be released, there's plenty we already know about the project.
10 The Original Movie
While the original film was a hit, it is not quite as well known as some other Disney classics. There are some audiences who might not even be aware of the film and why it is worthy of a live-action remake.
The story follows a strange alien creature named Stitch who is meant to be a weapon for his alien creators. However, he manages to escape and crash lands in Hawaii where he meets and forms a bond with a young girl named Lilo. The live-action remake could really feel like an early Steven Spielberg kind of family adventure.
9 The Plot
The recent live-action remakes of Disney films have not strayed too far from what was established in the original film. Aladdin introduced some new elements to the story and made some noticeable changes, while The Lion King was almost a shot-for-shot remake.
It seems that this new film will stick pretty close to the original story based on the early synopsis that reads, "The story is about the bond formed between a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who is engineered to be a force of destruction."
8 Development Team
While the film was only recently announced, there is already a team in place working at putting the movie together. The film will be produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich who are just coming off the success of the remake of Aladdin and are also attached to the upcoming Inspector Gadget reboot.
The film will be written by Mike Van Waes who is an up-and-coming screenwriter with a number of projects currently in the works.
7 Live-Action And CGI Hybrid
There was a time when these kinds of fantastic and imaginative adventures could only be told through animation. Computer graphics just weren't developed enough for the visuals that were necessary and animation was the way to go.
The recent live-action films have proven how far CGI has come in the past few decades. Unsurprisingly, the live-action Lilo & Stitch will employ a mix of live-action human characters and CGI alien characters to pull off the story.
6 Concerns From The Original Director
While the CGI used in the recent remake of The Lion King was certainly impressive, there were many who criticized how inferior it was to the animation style of the original. While the animals might have looked realistic, they lacked the emotional expression of the hand-drawn characters.
The original director of the animated Lilo & Stitch, Chris Sanders, explained that might be an issue when making a live-action version of the story. He explained that animation allowed for the character of Stitch to be alien yet still cute, but he worries if the same can be achieved with CGI.
5 Filming
A big part of the original film was its Hawaii setting. Lilo and her family are natives of the island and the movie embraces a lot of the Hawaiian culture. It really adds an interesting element to the film and separates it from other animated adventures.
It has been confirmed that the film will in fact shoot in Hawaii, so hopefully, they will similarly use the culture in the storytelling. The film was originally meant to begin filming this fall, but since there have been no new announcements, it's possible there have been delays due to COVID-19.
4 Director And Cast
With some of the most iconic films being retold, Disney has been able to draw some of the biggest talents in Hollywood to their live-action remakes. Behind the camera, directors like Guy Ritchie and Jon Favreau have brought classics to life. These films have also featured star-studded casts with the like of Will Smith, Cate Blanchette, and even Beyonce joining in on the fun.
With the Lilo & Stitch movie still in its early stages, the studio is said to be in search of the perfect director to helm the project. While no big casting announcements have been made, it is expected that Chris Sanders, the director of the first film, will return to voice Stitch one again.
3 Others In Development
Lilo & Stitch is just one of the latest of the live-action films to be announced. As Mulan prepares to make its debut, there are plenty of others at various stages of development.
Emma Stone is set to play Cruella de Vil in the live-action film based on the iconic Disney villain. Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy will star in a retelling of The Little Mermaid. Other planned projects include remakes of Pinocchio, Hercules, and Robin Hood to name but a few. With all those films in developed, it remains to be seen where Lilo & Stitch will fit into the calendar.
2 Disney+ Release
With streaming becoming such a presence in the film industry these days, it's no surprise that Disney developed its own service to meet those growing demands. Disney+ has been a big hit thus far, and it seems like they are looking to add some big projects in the future.
While the release of Mulan on Disney+ was unplanned, the studio has announced that Lilo & Stitch will premiere on the service. It is also said the film with have a budget similar to that of the Lady and the Tramp remake which was also released on Disney+.
1 The Show
Some fans of the original film might not be aware the Lilo & Stitch has expanded beyond the film. The story spun-off into a popular animated television series which aired for two seasons from 2003 to 2006.
The series followed Lilo and Stitch as they searched for other aliens of Stitch's kind who made their way to Earth. Each of these aliens had their own unique abilities and became beloved characters in their own right. It's unclear if the remake will borrow any elements from the show but it could help to expand the story.
